MEDIA ADVISORY: MAYOR BASS, COUNCILMEMBER RODRIGUEZ AND LADWP LEADERSHIP TO ANNOUNCE INSTALLATION OF NATION’S LARGEST EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT WATER PIPE

August 26, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHAT:

Mayor Karen Bass and 7th District Councilmember Monica Rodriguez will join the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to celebrate the installation of more than 22,000 feet or 4 miles of earthquake resistant water pipe-the longest in the entire United States. The Foothill Trunk Line Project is a water pipeline in the East San Fernando Valley that is replacing aging water pipes with new pipes featuring specialized joint technology designed to withstand earthquakes. This signifies an important milestone in the Foothill Trunkline Project as it completes the open trench installation along Foothill Boulevard preparing the project for additional work that is expected to be completed in 2032.

Citywide, 67 miles of earthquake resilient pipe have been installed directly ensuring the overall reliability and resiliency of L.A.’s drinking water system. Since the beginning of the resiliency program, all trunk lines that have been replaced have been earthquake resilient pipe and will be so moving forward. Trunk lines are large-diameter pipes that transport significant volumes of water from reservoirs and facilities to neighborhoods.
