Mayor Bass, LADWP Urge Impacted Customers to Conserve Water as Response Efforts Continue Following West Hollywood Pipe Rupture
Water Remains Safe to Drink; Sunset Boulevard between Larrabee Street and La Cienega Boulevard Remains Closed; Impacted Customers can Submit Claims at www.LADWP.com/Claims
LOS ANGELES – As LADWP crews continue to respond to the water pipe rupture in West Hollywood, Mayor Karen Bass and LADWP Interim General Manager David W. Hanson today urged residents in the immediate area on Sunset Boulevard between Larrabee Street on the west and Olive Drive on the east to conserve water as some observe reduced water pressure. LADWP reports that water remains safe to drink. Traffic closures are currently in effect on Sunset Boulevard between Larrabee Street and La Cienega Boulevard, as well as nearby streets for public safety. As LADWP crews continue to assess the extent of the damage and required repairs, they will have more information on how long streets may need to remain closed.
“As LADWP crews continue to work urgently to remove water to repair the pipe rupture in West Hollywood, people should avoid the area and conserve water as some may experience a loss of water pressure,” said Mayor Bass. “Water to the pipe has been shut off, and anyone who has experienced damage should speak to LADWP personnel on the ground or visit LADWP.com/Claims for immediate assistance.”
“I want to thank the residents and businesses of West Hollywood for their patience, vigilance, and partnership throughout today’s response,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “I’m especially grateful to our firefighters, deputies, utility and County Public Works crews, and all first responders who acted swiftly to complete search and rescue operations and protect lives. Los Angeles County will remain alongside our partners at the City of West Hollywood and LADWP until recovery is complete and every impacted resident and business has the support they need.”
While water remains available, some LADWP customers especially on higher building floors in the surrounding area have reported low water pressure. Water continues to flow to customers through an 8-inch pipe in lieu of the ruptured 36-inch pipe that is currently out of service. LADWP is actively adjusting water operations to restore water pressure without causing further water issues. Water remains safe to drink.
Currently, LADWP crews are removing water from the 0.7-mile isolated section of the large diameter pipe and the area surrounding the rupture before securing it and assessing the extent of the damage. Approximately 195,000 gallons of water need to be removed and the work involves shoring to make the area safe before excavation to assess the damage to the pipe can commence. LADWP crews will continue to work around the clock until the pipe is repaired and traffic can be safely opened.
LADWP Claims staff will remain onsite in front of 1010 Palm Avenue, West Hollywood, CA 90069, through 7:00 PM tonight and Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM to respond to questions about property damage and claims.
