LOS ANGELES (September 10, 2026) – The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) continues to urge customers to conserve energy today as high electricity demand continues due to extreme heat and humidity. Simple habits, such as avoiding running large appliances like washing machines and dishwashers, will help with energy conservation. LADWP thanks its customers for heeding yesterday’s call to conserve energy to help manage electricity demand. Conservation by customers in L.A.’s westside communities is especially requested as temperatures remain unusually high in the area.
LADWP has over 90 field crews deployed across the city to respond to any power outages that occur. Crews worked overnight to restore power to neighborhoods affected by localized outages, prioritizing work on the oldest outages first.
To help conserve energy, LADWP encourages customers to do the following:
- Adjust air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees to manage energy usage during the hottest hours of the day when air conditioning systems have to work hardest to cool.
- Avoid use of major appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and other heavy appliances.
- Avoid using your stove or oven which can generate additional heat indoors.
- Visit a cooling center to give your air conditioner a rest. The City of Los Angeles has several cooling centers open to support our residents and pets, too! For a list of the City’s cooling centers, go to the City’s Emergency Management Department’s page https://emergency.lacity.gov/heat
- Close window curtains, shades or blinds during the heat of the day to reduce the extra heat from direct sunlight through windows.
- Turn off lights and other electrical equipment when they are not in use.
- Unplug “energy vampires” like cell phone chargers, microwave ovens and other appliances that use energy even when not in use.
