Water Main Break in San Pedro Community
Crews Quickly Restored Water to All Residents
LOS ANGELES– At 1 p.m. today, a 20 inch water main broke under Gaffey Street between Gatun and Basin Streets in San Pedro. Water was forced upward and flowed through cracks in the pavement. The affected water main temporarily disrupted service to approximately 75 residential customers. Due to the quick action of LADWP crews, service has been restored to all but one multi-unit retail complex. Crews will continue to work into the night to make repairs until all customers are restored.
Immediately after the main break was detected by LADWP, the street was cordoned-off by LAPD and LAFD crews to ensure public safety. LADWP crews were immediately dispatched to the location of the main break to determine the cause and to shut off the water. The cause of the water main break still remains under investigation. After all repairs have been completed, Street Services will commence with street reparations.
The largest municipally owned utility in the nation, the LADWP was established more than 100 years ago to provide water and electricity to meet the needs of the City’s residents and businesses. LADWP currently serves more than 4 million people in the City of Los Angeles.
