Vanowen Main Break Update |
LOS ANGELES — Shortly after 3:30 a.m., LADWP crews responded to 20-inch water main break on the 16400 block of Vanowen Street at Havenhurst in the Valley. LADWP responded rapidly to the location to reduce water pressure, and later shut off the water to begin to make repairs.
Currently, 31 services, or approximately 100 customers, are without water while the main is under repair. LADWP claims representatives are on site to assist those affected by the main break. Initially, 8 small residential and commercial buildings were evacuated, consisting of approximately 35 customers. One 12-unit apartment building remains evacuated and residents will be relocated. An 8-unit property also remains under evacuation at this time. Another 6-unit complex south of location possibly affected. Approximately 70 residents are affected. Staff are currently onsite assessing the needs of those evacuated and will be arranging temporary shelter as needed. Vanowen remains closed to traffic between Hayvenhurst and Valjean.
Our water distribution system consists of 7,200 miles of pipeline, equal to approximately 38 million feet. We have 14 full-time crews dedicated to mainline replacement under LADWP’s Water Main Replacement Program. In the past three years, LADWP has replaced 270,000 feet of mainline. The program’s current goal is 130,000 feet, which is up from 60,000 feet replaced in 06-07. Calendar Year 2010 had the lowest number of leaks in the last seven years. # # # |
