Statement by LADWP Regarding Shoup Avenue Natural Gas Line Fire |
Today at approximately 1 p.m. a 4 inch natural gas line owned by Southern California Gas Company was struck near 5858 Shoup Avenue in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles causing a fire that engulfed a backhoe according to reports from the Los Angeles Fire Department and crews at the scene. Prior to the line being struck, LADWP Water System crews were on site installing an 8-inch fire service to the adjacent property. As of 4pm, SoCal Gas Company is on site and LAFD reports that the gas supply has been shut off and the fire extinguished.
All scheduled, non-emergency, underground construction by LADWP crews is approved in advance and occurs only after utility lines are marked by the utility owner, or its contracted entity. At this time, the incident is under investigation to determine why the gas line was struck.
The safety of employees and the public is LADWP’s top priority. We are working with emergency response crews on scene to determine the cause and will provide further information to the public as it becomes available.
