LOS ANGELES (September 7, 2020)–Our local neighborhood power grid was hit hard by yesterday’s record-breaking heat storm, resulting in over 300 small neighborhood outages as of Noon today, as well as larger outages affecting multiple neighborhoods in the City of Los Angeles.
Crews made strong progress overnight and as of Noon, they have restored power to over 115,000 customers since Saturday. Currently there are 32,000 customers affected citywide, including approximately 8,000 customers affected by small, neighborhood level outages.
To assist with restoration work, LADWP is requesting mutual aid from nearby utilities in order to help with the high number of small outages. Restoring neighborhood outages affecting groups of 5-20 homes takes our crews much longer than larger circuit level or partial circuit outages where a single crew may be able to restore power to 500 – 1000+ customers in the same amount of time. In contrast, neighborhood outages typically take a single crew 4-6 hours to restore power to a much smaller group of customers.
Current estimated time for response remains 24-48 hours, but this could change. Dispatchers continue to assign repair crews to locations where customers have been out the longest and are reviewing and updating data on assignments and outages. As they continue to assess our progress and the potential for mutual aid, we will update our estimated response times, which could be extended longer.
We understand how difficult long outages are on our customers and their families and want to assure everyone currently affected that our crews remain focused on getting every repair job done quickly and safely. They have been working around the clock on 16-hour shifts since Saturday and will continue until every last customer is restored. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we respond to one of the worst heat storms ever to hit our City.

Cooling Centers
We encourage customers to check on elderly neighbors and also to consider using cooling centers which remain open during the excessive heat warning.
Cooling centers will be open from 12pm-8pm on September 4 – September 7, 2020. Patrons are encouraged to call ahead to check availability- COVID-19 social distancing requirements have resulted in reduced capacity at the sites. All centers will operate following LA County Public Health’s Guidelines for Cooling Center Operations.
