LOS ANGELES, CA (October 10, 2024) – About 275 free air conditioners were given to qualified LADWP customers age 60 and over at LADWP’s Cool LA Heat Relief for Seniors event at the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center in Reseda. The event was co-hosted by the Office of Los Angeles City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, District 3, and the L.A. Department of Aging.
More than 300 guests from across the San Fernando Valley joined the event, where they were able to sign up for utility bill financial assistance programs like EZ-SAVE, Lifeline and Level Pay, and learn about good-paying LADWP jobs. The L.A. Department of Aging offered free COVID and flu vaccines and information about their support programs for older Angelenos, which include help with meals, transportation, and elder fraud and abuse.
“The West San Fernando Valley is no stranger to excessive heat warnings,” said City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield. “As heat waves become more frequent and intense, it is imperative to protect our most vulnerable residents by providing the tools and resources to combat extreme heat.”
President of the Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners Richard Katz noted, “LADWP is not just providing air conditioners at this event; we’re also supporting our customers in the long term, by enrolling every income-qualified person who attends in programs that reduce their utility bills or make their bills easier to pay.”
LADWP Chief Executive Officer and Chief Engineer Janisse Quiñones added, “Given the way that the climate has been changing, staying cool is no longer just a matter of staying comfortable; it’s a matter of public health and safety. Nearly one in five Angelenos are over the age of 60, which means they are especially at risk in the kind of heat waves that Los Angeles has suffered in recent months. Providing cooling equipment that is energy-efficient and ready to use provides affordable relief for our customers that can immediately change their lives for the better.”
