LADWP Promotes Growth of Electric Vehicles through Suite of Attractive Rebates during National Drive Electric Week
LOS ANGELES (September 12, 2019) – Los Angeles residents interested in electric vehicles (EV) are invited to the ninth annual “Charge Up LA!,” Los Angeles’ premier EV test drive event, on Saturday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center, 1700 Stadium Way. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the lead sponsor of the event, which offers participants the opportunity to test drive an EV or plug-in hybrid (PHEV), learn about a wide range of rebate programs and talk to current EV owners and industry experts about “driving green.” Held during National Drive Electric Week in partnership with EV advocacy organizations, the event drew more than 1,200 attendees last year.
“EVs bring direct benefit to our environment by reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality,” said Martin Adams, Interim LADWP General Manager and Chief Engineer. “LADWP supports the growth in the adoption of electric vehicles in our city not only because of the ecological impacts but to also help our customers save money by charging their cars with electricity at home or at work, instead of fueling with gas.” Adams adds, “To make EV adoption easier, we are installing charging infrastructure and providing incentives for every type of EV driver. The “Charge Up LA!” event will help those interested in EVs to test them out, learn about their benefits and hopefully, join the EV community soon!”
“Electric vehicles save drivers time and money, are better for the environment, and are more fun to drive,” said Joel Levin, executive director of Plug In America. “Charge Up LA is a great opportunity to get behind the wheel, talk to EV drivers, learn about money-saving programs, and discover why nearly 600,000 Californians have switched to driving electric!”
Event highlights include:
- Vehicles available to test drive (subject to change): Audi e-tron, BMW 530e, BMW i3, Chrysler Pacifica, Jaguar I-PACE, Kia Niro EV, MINI Cooper S E Countryman, Nissan LEAF and Toyota Prius Prime.
- LADWP team members providing one-on-one expertise and guidance on customer rebates for used EVs and home and workplace chargers.
Programs include:- Residential EV Charging Station Rebate Program: LADWP is currently working on increasing the current rebate to supplement the purchase of a qualified home EV charger and adding a rebate for the installation of a dedicated TOU (Time-of Use) meter for the charger, which allows the customer to take advantage of the off-peak charging discount.
- Used EV Rebate Program: The newly revised program, to be announced soon, will increase the current rebate amount of $450 to $1,500 towards the purchase of a qualifying used EV or plug-in hybrid EV.
- Additional resources are available for Southern California Edison incentives and federal and state programs.

- Food trucks, displays, games and raffle prizes.
- Free parking for the public at Dodger Stadium parking lot #13.
LADWP has been at the forefront of efforts to promote transportation electrification, issuing $12.7 million in residential and commercial EV incentives since 2011 and operating one of the largest plug-in fleets in the city, with over 700 all-electric and hybrid vehicles. The Department aims to have 10,000 public, workplace and fleet EV chargers in Los Angeles by 2022 and 25,000 by 2025.
