BACKGROUND
Due to climate change and extreme weather patterns, seniors and vulnerable communities can struggle to stay cool in extreme heat during the summer months. As such, LADWP has been working with the Los Angeles Department of Aging and elected officials to host the “Heat Relief for Seniors” events. As part of LADWP’s “Cool LA” program, LADWP aims to help customers, especially older adults, income-qualified individuals and families, and those living in underserved communities, to better manage the impacts of extreme heat. Extreme heat endangers health and well-being for those living in heat islands – areas where the average temperature is hotter than surrounding regions.
The latest such event will take place Monday, August 26, 2024 at the Alicia Broadous-Duncan Senior Center, at 11300 Glenoaks Blvd. in Pacoima. This event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and is open to seniors 60 and over (please bring proof of age). As part of this event, we will be giving away free portable air conditioners (while supplies last, one per home address) to seniors 60 and over who are income-qualified and who are enrolled in LADWP’s EZ-SAVE or the City of Los Angeles Lifeline program. For seniors 60 and over who have not yet enrolled in EZ-SAVE, they can do so at this event. We will be holding more such events, so stay tuned and check that same web page for updates!
Cool LA is one of LADWP’s Powered by Equity initiatives: a collection of programs that ensures that no Los Angeles community is left behind as the city moves toward a clean energy future. Learn more at LADWP.com/PoweredByEquity.
