Mayor Villaraigosa and First Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner today issued the following statement following the Adoption of AB 32 Regulations by the California Air Resources Board: “We are pleased to hear that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has adopted the final regulations to implement the California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32). We appreciate Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s unwavering stewardship in moving our state forward on renewable energy and carbon reduction. We would also like to thank CARB Chairwoman Mary Nichols for her efforts and commitment to finding a strong, balanced approach that will allow the City of Los Angeles and the LA Department of Water and Power to continue on its aggressive path toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The City of Los Angeles is committed to continuing to be an environmental leader. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has played a major role in these efforts, producing 20% of its energy from renewable sources, reducing our carbon emissions to 22% lower than our 1990 level, implementing efficiency programs to reduce power usage, and enacting conservation measures to reduce our water usage by over 20%. LADWP has worked with State and Federal authorities on innovative programs including our proposal to become the first and only, utility in California to commit to eliminating our use of ocean water in a way that can save LADWP customers hundreds of millions of dollars per year. Environmental preservation and conservation efforts must be based on economically sustainable and affordable rates and the regulations adopted by CARB today will support these ongoing efforts.” |
