May 2, 2022 (LOS ANGELES)-The action taken last week by the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) Board provided affected water agencies with two options to reduce water use in their areas. Just like other affected agencies, the City of LA will determine how it will comply. We are currently awaiting important information from MWD in order to make a recommendation to the Mayor as set forth in the City’s Mandatory Water Conservation Ordinance.
Angelenos have stepped up and reduced their water use dramatically over the past decade to one of the lowest levels in the region, but we all have to do more. There is no doubt that a third year of drought and record dry conditions require everyone in Southern California to continue to cut back further on their water use. To help our customers permanently reduce their water use we have expanded funding for water conservation programs. We want to assure our customers that we are working to strengthen our local infrastructure to reduce our reliance on imported water, capture more stormwater and clean-up our aquifers to boost local water supplies. We will also be working with MWD and urging them to make the necessary infrastructure improvements to be able to move water from their regional storage system, which our customers have helped pay for, to be able to reach the areas affected by their emergency action so that the problem we are experiencing this year can be avoided in the future.
