LADWP Science Bowl to Be Aired on Special Half-Hour Television Program on LA CityView Channel 35 and KLCS Channel 58

LOS ANGELES — A special half-hour program broadcasting the complete final round of competition and highlights of the LADWP Science Bowl XV will air seven times in April including four times on LA CityView Channel 35 and three times on KLCS Channel 58.

The two teams featured in the television program are competing in the final round of competition. They are the last two remaining from a 42-team field. These teams are from North Hollywood High School and Granada Hills Charter High School.
The winner of the match represents the city of Los Angeles and LADWP Science Bowl regional competition at the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. April 26 to 30, 2007. A total of 25 public, private and parochial high schools were represented this year in the regional.
The moderator, who asks the toss up and bonus questions, is Dr. Ed Krupp, the director of the Griffith Observatory. This year’s LADWP Science Bowl theme was, “Griffith Observatory Reopening, ‘Where the Stars are the Stars.’”
In addition to the buzzer competition, a separate hands-competition was held enabling teams to win alternate prizes was also shown. This competition, was named for the late LADWP associate power engineer and Science Bowl volunteer, Franklin Lu.
This year there are 67 regional competitions in 40 states including 10 in California. A total of 12,000 students in 1800 high schools participated. Since the National Science Bowl program began more than 100,000 students have participated nationally.
Science Bowl is fast paced game show style competition, based on the old GE College Bowl television program. A moderator asks toss-up questions to the two competing teams. An individual answering the question correctly earns four points for his or her team and the exclusive right for their teams to answer a 10 point bonus question. Subjects covered in Science Bowl include chemistry, physics, earth and space science, biology, genetics, trigonometry, calculus and computer programming.
Schools representing the LADWP Science Bowl and the city of Los Angeles have the best record at the National Science Bowl compared to any region or state in the nation.
National championships were won by Van Nuys High School in 1995, Venice High School in 1996 and 1997 and North Hollywood High School in 2001. In total the LADWP regional championship teams have won trophies (placed 1st to 5th) nine out of the last 12 years. North Hollywood placed second in the nation in 2006.
The television program was produced and funded by CityView Channel 35, the city of Los Angeles cable access television station.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is the nation’s largest municipal utility. It has provided utility services to residents and businesses for more than 100 years.
