LOS ANGELES (September 6, 2024) — As temperatures across the City continue to exceed 100 degrees and nights stay hot, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) reminds customers to conserve energy use where possible, while staying safe.
LADWP has the supply to meet customer demand at this time, but demand for electricity across the region remains very high. Following simple tips to conserve electricity safely can also help to reduce strain on neighborhood electrical infrastructure that can overheat from not having adequate time to cool off overnight.
LADWP recommends the following tips to conserve energy while still staying safe from the heat:
- Adjust your air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees. If you are away from your home and do not have pets inside, turn your air conditioning systems off.
- Limit the use of major appliances such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and dishwashers to before 4pm, or after 9 pm.
- Ventilate your home in the early morning and evening by opening windows and doors to clear out the heat and allow cooler air to circulate. Close window curtains, shades, or blinds during warmer hours to reduce the extra heat from direct sunlight coming through windows.
- Turn off lights and other electrical equipment when they are not in use.
- Unplug “energy vampires” like cell phone and computer chargers, and other appliances that use energy even when not in use.
- Avoid using the stove and oven if possible, which can help to keep temperatures down indoors.
The number of customers without power at any given time has been relatively low, but there are many smaller residential outages that take time for crews to restore. As of 2:00pm Friday, there are approximately 2,699 customers without electric service. Our current estimated response time for our crews to respond to outages is between 4-12 hours. Crews are working in extreme temperatures to restore power to affected customers as quickly and as safely as possible.
LADWP has also scheduled additional shifts in its call center through the weekend to handle increased calls associated with outages.
Should an outage occur, customers can report it online, check on the status of repairs, or sign up to receive outage notifications by visiting www.ladwp.com/outages. Outages can also be reported by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).
LADWP will continue to provide safety tips, conservation tips and other relevant information to our customers through various social media channels (@ladwp on X and Facebook, @ladwp1 on Instagram), LADWP newsroom, and on NextDoor.
