7th Annual Sustainability Awards Honors 20 Businesses for Environmental Impact
LOS ANGELES (May 9, 2022)—The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) celebrated its largest customers’ achievements in electrification, efficiency and conservation at the 7th Annual Sustainability Awards. The recent virtual ceremony and awards presentation honored 20 businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies whose participation in LADWP rebate programs resulted in substantial positive environmental impacts.
“Angelenos are leaders when it comes to making conservation a part of everyday life,” said LADWP General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams. “LADWP’s Sustainability Awards is a chance for us to applaud our commercial customers for what they have accomplished in reducing energy and water use, curtailing electrical load, and installing EV chargers to help Los Angeles become an even more efficient and sustainable city.”
The honorees’ actions drove the conservation of almost 5 million gallons of water per year, or the equivalent of what 70 Los Angeles homes use annually. They reduced annual CO2 emissions by 7,840 tons, or the equivalent of taking almost 2,000 cars off our roads and highways. They also installed a combined 383 Level 2 and 38 Level 3 electric vehicle chargers. These sustainability successes reflect the awardees’ strong partnership with LADWP and a mutual dedication to making a greener and cleaner Los Angeles.
“We are grateful to LADWP for this program and recognition and for your partnership in the Statewide Energy Partnership program,” said Nurit Katz, Chief Sustainability Officer at UCLA, which was honored for its achievements in energy efficiency. “We look forward to continued collaboration as we move towards our carbon neutrality, renewable energy, and water goals for 2025.”
Established in 2016, the Sustainability Awards provide an annual forum for LADWP to support and recognize its commercial customers’ demonstrated commitment to sustainability. Each year, winners are determined by quantitative analysis of the environmental impact of the customer’s projects for which LADWP paid rebates. The savings achieved during the calendar year those projects were completed is compared to the calendar year prior to those sustainability measures being implemented.
The 20 winners fall into four categories—Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, Electrification of Transportation and Demand Response. Both Leadership and Impact awards were presented. Leadership Awards highlight the customers who achieved the greatest absolute energy or water savings. Impact Awards recognize the customers who achieved the greatest energy or water savings relative to their annual usage.
This year’s event featured a new award for Level 3 chargers in the Electrification of Transportation category, with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation taking home first place for its installation of 30 direct-current electric vehicle fast chargers. Decron Properties Corporation rose to the top for both the Electrification of Transportation – Level 2 award and the Water Conservation – Leadership award. Another 2022 two-time winner was Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) for the Energy Efficiency – Leadership award and Demand Response – Leadership award. LAUSD’s first-place finish for demand response marks its sixth consecutive year of earning top honors for energy curtailment.
