The utility recognized 18 of its largest customers for their environmental efforts at its 8th Annual Sustainability Awards on April 26.
LOS ANGELES (May 9, 2023)—In its 8th Annual Sustainability Awards event, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) Key Accounts Section honored 18 of the utility’s largest customers for their significant efforts and successes in sustainability over the previous year. During the event’s first in-person ceremony since 2019, event attendees gathered at the La Kretz Innovation Campus to celebrate those customers’ achievements in transportation electrification, energy efficiency, demand response, and water conservation.
“It would be dangerous to ignore the climate challenges currently facing us, and the customers we honor today represent not just 18 of our largest customers, but leaders within the city who model the importance of making necessary changes now to mitigate the impacts of those challenges,” said Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioner Nurit Katz. “I commend every one of today’s honorees for what they have accomplished individually, for how those accomplishments are helping Los Angeles meet our environmental goals, and for how their accomplishments are contributing to the vitally important and urgent efforts around the world to slow the impacts of climate change.”
Since 2016, the Sustainability Awards has offered LADWP an annual opportunity to gather with Los Angeles’ business community to acknowledge their shared commitment to sustainability and the environmental achievements resulting from the customers’ participation in the utility’s rebate programs.
“Today’s honorees are here not only because they share LADWP’s commitment to creating a more sustainable city and greener future, but also because they have achieved staggering successes in reducing water and power use, and installing new electric transportation charging stations over the past year,” said LADWP General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin Adams. “Through their actions, we estimate these Key Account customers will reduce annual CO2 emissions by almost 2,900 tons and conserve 6.25 million gallons of water annually—in addition to installing a total of 317 electric vehicle chargers.”
The 2023 awardees’ estimated reduction of almost 2,900 tons of CO2 emissions is equivalent to taking approximately 736 gasoline-powered cars off the roads and highways each year. Their decrease in annual water use by 6.25 million gallons translates to about what 54 homes use each year. And with the installation of 296 Level 2 (L2) and 21 Level 3 (L3) electric vehicle (EV) chargers, customers helped drive Los Angeles closer to its goal of installing 45,000 commercial EV chargers by 2025.
This year, 18 customers were awarded honors across four categories: Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, Electrification of Transportation, and Demand Response. Of those customers, Decron Properties Corporation, University of Southern California, and Los Angeles World Airports were recognized for their achievements in more than one category.
Within the four award categories, Leadership Awards were presented to customers who achieved the greatest absolute energy or water savings, while Impact Awards went to customers who achieved the greatest energy or water savings relative to their annual usage. In the Electrification of Transportation category, awards were given to customers who installed the most Level 2 EV chargers and Level 3 EV chargers.
Honorees and the scale of their sustainability accomplishments are determined through quantitative analysis of their environmental impacts. The amount of water or energy savings is calculated based on the savings achieved during the year those sustainability measures were implemented in comparison to the calendar year prior to implementation.
