LOS ANGELES (September 6, 2020)–As of 9pm, LADWP crews had restored power to 77,000 LADWP customers since extreme temperatures began on Saturday, September 5th. Crews continue working to restore power to 70,000 customers across the city this evening as today’s record-setting heat caused outages. The intense heat storm that hit Los Angeles and resulting electricity use triggered over 200 small neighborhood outages, as distribution equipment overheated and overloaded, causing some equipment to fail. Local distribution stations also overheated, leading to larger circuit outages affecting multiple neighborhoods.
Crews will be working throughout the night and around the clock to restore power as quickly and safely as possible to affected customers. Due to the high number of outage incidents that occurred this afternoon, we have extended the estimated timeframe for response and restoration. As a result, the estimated time to respond to outages is now 24 to 48 hours and crews will make every effort to restore customers within 48 hours of the start of an outage.
“Today’s intense and unrelenting heat hit our power distribution hard in many neighborhoods in the City, causing equipment, stations and circuits to overload,” said Andrew Kendall, Sr. Assistant General Manager, Power System Distribution. “We’ve had all of our resources focused on restoring power as quickly as possible and have made significant progress, while also keeping our crews safe as they work in extreme temperatures. We’ll continue to make significant progress overnight, but we also want to let customers know that it will take time to restore everyone so they can plan accordingly,” Kendall added.
With temperatures remaining high into the night, we encourage everyone to check on elderly neighbors to make sure they are safe and keep your AC set to 78 degrees or higher to help our neighborhood power grids recover.

Cooling Centers Information
Cooling centers will be open from 12pm-8pm on September 4 – September 7, 2020. Patrons are encouraged to call ahead to check availability- COVID-19 social distancing requirements have resulted in reduced capacity at the sites. All centers will operate following LA County Public Health’s Guidelines for Cooling Center Operations.
