~7,600 customer remain affected by outages, as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday
FEBRUARY 28, 2023 (LOS ANGELES)– Despite more rainfall across LADWP’s service area Monday, crews were able to make significant progress Monday and Tuesday in restoring power to customers experiencing outages as a result of storm conditions that began Friday.
As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, an estimated 7,600 customers remained affected by outages—that’s down from approximately 27,000 customers without power at noon Monday. LADWP crews were able to restore power to more than 140,000 customers through the course of the record storm event.
We understand the frustration experienced by customers who went without power for multiple days and those who are still without power. The damage caused by the rain and wind event is significant and comparable to that of a large magnitude earthquake. In addition to the indiscriminate toppling of trees that damaged LADWP power poles and accounted for many of the power outages, the persistent wet conditions resulted in water intrusion into our underground system. These, as well as the major impacts to two substations early on during the storm were, responsible for the loss of power to several communities in Exposition Park and in parts of the Valley.
LADWP crews will continue to work around the clock restoring power to customers as well as returning to locations where power was previously restored in order to replace temporary fixes with more permanent repairs. Due to the level of damage the storm left in its wake, the need for permanent repairs and the potential for more rainfall in the forecast, the current crew response timeframe will remain at up to 48 hours until operations can return to a close-to-normal level.
