LA Energy Demand Hits New March Record
LADWP ASSURES CUSTOMERS OF AMPLE POWER SUPPLY DURING UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPS
LOS ANGELES — As an unseasonable heat wave continued today in Los Angeles, the Department of Water and Power (LADWP) reported an all-time high for energy demand during the month of March.
Despite record temps and power consumption, the LADWP assured customers that the City has an ample power supply to meet the energy demand.
In addition, no heat-related power outages affected the LADWP’s 1.4 million electric customers.
As of 4 p.m. today, the energy load was headed for a record peak of 4252 megawatts. That exceeds the previous March high of 4088 megawatts, set on March 29, 2004.
On Sunday, the City also experienced a record high for a Sunday in March of 3386 megawatts, beating the previous high of 3311 megawatts on March 12, 2006.
The current all-time energy demand record of 6165 megawatts was set on July 24, 2006.
“Customers can rest assured that the City has sufficient energy generation and reserves to meet our demand,” said LADWP General Manager Ronald F. Deaton. “However, we also encourage customers to use energy wisely to help reduce their costs and to reduce power generation to benefit the environment.”
LADWP’s total energy capacity is about 7200 megawatts.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the nation’s largest municipal utility, provides reliable, low-cost water and power services to Los Angeles residents and businesses in an environmentally responsible manner. LADWP services about 1.4 million electric customers and 680,000 water customers in Los Angeles.
