LOS ANGELES (February 24, 2022) – Today, Councilmember John Lee (Council District 12); Nancy Sutley, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Senior Assistant General Manager of External and Regulatory Affairs and Chief Sustainability Officer; Edgar Sedano, Executive Director of LAPD Devonshire PALS; and PALS youth came together to harvest several bushels of kale produced by the City of Los Angeles’ newly-installed indoor farm.
The indoor farm, housed inside a shipping container, is located in Northridge at the LAPD Devonshire PALS center, which provides after-school enrichment programs for local youth. The youth help maintain the farm and help with harvesting the produce to donate to local community-based organizations.
LADWP is one of about a dozen utilities nationwide to participate in a two-year study led by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to advance indoor food production in urban settings as a solution to reduce energy and water use as well as carbon emissions that result from the transport of foods over long distances.
This LADWP-EPRI pilot project, with the support of Council District 12 and LAPD Devonshire PALS, provides an environment to grow and harvest vegetables year-round in any climate for the benefit of the community. (LEARN MORE)
