LOS ANGELES – Demonstrating grace and agility under pressure, and an astonishing grasp of advanced science, math and technology concepts, North Hollywood High School Team B took first place today in the 17th annual Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Science Bowl Regional Competition.
“Hearty congratulations to North Hollywood High School Team B who will make fantastic representatives of Los Angeles at the nationals,” said LADWP Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Nahai. They displayed their high level of preparation, committed teamwork and vast knowledge to great effect during the competition. They clearly earned their victory.”
The team will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), to represent the city of Los Angeles at the National Science Bowl April 30 to May 5, 2009.
The runner up was Harvard-Westlake School. Third place went to North Hollywood Hight School Team A and fourth place was awarded to El Camino Real High School.
In addition to the regular buzzer competition, the special Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition, named after the late Department electrical engineer and Science Bowl volunteer, was also held. This year the competition involved constructing and racing a self-propelled vehicle. In this competition the team from Reseda High School placed first, taking home the Franklin Lu Hands-On Trophy. Second place was presented to Westchester High School. Third place was awarded to San Pedro High School and fourth place went to St. Genevieve High School.
Science Bowl is a proud LADWP tradition and excellent example of the Department’s commitment to the Los Angeles educational community. Each year, the LADWP Science Bowl test the city’s sharpest students’ reflexes, teamwork skills and sheer knowledge in a fun competitive atmosphere following a television game show format. LADWP is one of only a few utilities in the nation to serve as a coordinating regional sponsor and host.
LADWP is also involved in a number of educational partnership and community programs including the curriculum development, the LA Infrastructure Academy, the Youth Service Academy, the Adopt-A-School Program and the Times in Education Program. Further information about LADWP education programs is available by visiting www.ladwp.com., clicking on the “Community Involvement” section and then selecting “LADWP in the School.”
